South Pasadena High’s hopes fell short of going to the CIF-Southern Section water polo semifinals next week after the Tigers fell 8-3 to Mira Costa on Saturday afternoon.
Mira Costa led the quarterfinal match 2-1 after the first quarter and increased it to 4-1 at the half.
The Mustangs’ solid defense held South to only one goal in the second half, and it came when the contest had already been decided.
“It was a scrappy battle,” said South Pasadena High coach Michael Gonzales, noting that “my guys didn’t leave anything in the pool,” meaning Tiger players gave it everything to the bitter end.
South Pasadena co-captain Pierce Deamer powered in two goals for the Tigers, the final coming with only 15 seconds left in the fourth period. Adrian Suarez scored the other goal for South Pas in the first period.
“We have nothing to be ashamed about,” said Gonzales. “Mira Costa is a very well coached team. In transition, they were relentless throughout the game. They are well disciplined. Our guys did a good job. They held their own. There were no easy goals.”
