Marcy and Nikiko Masumoto, co-authors along with David Mas Masumoto of “The Perfect Peach: Recipes and Stories from the Masumoto Family Farm” talked about their book last Thursday night as part of the South Pasadena Library author’s series.
They spoke to a large gathering in a grassy area outside the South Pasadena Library Community Room.
The Perfect Peach” has been called a “story-cookbook” and it’s filled with 50 peach recipes and more than 20 essays providing the fascinating, juicy back story of peaches, family farming, and eating. During their reading and performance, Marcy and Nikiko shared insights and give a taste of their love and life of peaches.
David Mas Masumoto, Marcy’s husband and Nikiko’s father was not unable to attend due to crop responsibilities.
The Masumoto Family Farm is an 80-acre organic farm in Del Rey, California. Both the Masumoto name and family farm first became well known to the American public when “Epitaph for a Peach: Four Seasons on My Family Farm” became a bestseller in 1995 and won the Julia Child Cookbook Award in the Literary Food Writing category.
Since then, David Mas Masumoto has penned many other popular books including “Harvest Son,” “Four Seasons in Five Senses” and “Heirlooms.” Feature articles about Mr. Masumoto have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Time Magazine, and the New York Times. David Mas Masumoto is closely associated with the urban farmers’ market movement and has been called a “rock star of the organic foods movement.”
Mr. Masumoto has also earned the title “America’s Literary Farmer.” The Masumoto Farm has been featured in Sunset, Country Living, and Glamour magazine, on television as part of the “California Heartland” PBS series, as well as on the nationally-aired program “Ripe for Change.”
The event will opened with a performance by Kyodo Taiko. The drum troupe was founded in 1990 by Mark Honda under UCLA’s Nikkei Student Union, establishing the nation’s first collegiate taiko team..”
